Celebrating Paul R. Williams & the Historic South LA Black Cultural District

Honoring a Legacy. Discovering Black South LA.

Paul Revere Williams (1894–1980) was a pioneering Black architect whose designs helped shape the landscape of Los Angeles. Overcoming racial barriers in his profession, Williams became one of the city’s most influential architects, designing homes, civic buildings, and cultural landmarks that continue to define Southern California’s built environment.

As the first Black member of the American Institute of Architects, Williams not only helped shape Los Angeles at-large, but through his work he also made a lasting impact in the Historic South LA Black Cultural District (BCD). From churches and commercial centers to homes and corporate offices, his work created spaces where Black Angelenos could gather, build, and thrive. His legacy reflects the creativity, resilience, and lasting contributions of Black Angelenos who have shaped the city’s history and culture.

The BCD celebrates this legacy by uplifting the people, places, businesses, and cultural assets that tell the story of Black Los Angeles. As one of California’s first state-designated Black Cultural Districts, the BCD connects residents and visitors with the rich history, creativity, and community life that make South LA unique.

Stay Tuned as we announce more celebrations of Paul R. Williams coming in 2027.
